OBJECTS3

This project is to design objects that result from hypothetical collaborations between different artists. The artist I primarily worked on is Rachel Whiteread. Most of her artworks are characterized by casting the negative spaces, inside and around domestic objects and buildings, and turning these notional spaces into solid forms.

Rachel Whiteread
Alexander McQueen

This collaboration is with artist Alexander McQueen, who has a series of silver accessories in the shape of bones and spines. By using bones and spines as primary structure of a house, Rachel’s famous hut was recreated, with the same level of delicacy and fine details casted in white plaster.

Yinka Shonibare

This collaboration is with artist Yinka Shonibare, who has made a series of sculptures of wind, trying to visualize the outline of wind with a tangible shape. This notion of making invisible things visible is very close to Rachel’s idea. Using resins in pastel colors, the movement of wind is captured inside.

Vincent Schwenk

This collaboration is with artist Vincent Schwenk, who works with delicate, bouncy, animated objects. Using the cardboard box as a platform, the contents is revealed by the casting process. The use of plaster as primary material also emphasizes the idea of casting.
